One instrument with two players: that is the impression left by the duo performance of Evan Parker on saxophone Joel Ryan on live electronics, demonstrated once again in their “Reihe” concert at the Forum Neues Musiktheater. (…) Ryan’s talent for using live electronics to multiply the stimuli provided by Parker’s soprano saxophone lies entirely in processing them in ways that are not arbitrary but rather characteristic. When the saxophonist chooses a minimalist, repetitive pattern, it can be multiplied just as effectively as when Parker triggers splintering planes of sound or wild scales that thanks to Ryan’s refined electronics flow into an acoustic chamber of horrors. (…) The changing expressive values of the various improvisations is astounding: the bizarre contrasts with the meditative, a lyrical moment is bracketed between collective tonal architecture that seems to expand into a fourth dimension. It was great that for all the complexity in the interplay of the instrument and the machine, both musicians were prepared to offer an encore: an impulse that Parker reduced nearly to an interval of a second was taken up intensely by Ryan.
