  Joost Rekveld
Light and Video Artist

Born in 1970. Originally inspired by the idea of creating visual music, music for the eyes, Rekveld has been making abstract films and creating kinetic installations since 1992. For his animations, he develops his own tools, which are often based on ideas borrowed from abandoned byways of the history of science and technology. He primarily works with various forms of scanning and ideas related to the early history of optics and perspective. His interest in the spatial aspect of light has recently prompted him to shift his focus from film to architectural and theatrical forms.
In 1994 he completed his studies at the Interfaculty Image and Sound at the University of Den Haag, where he also attended courses in philosophy, aesthetics, and electronic musical composition. Since 1997 he has been teaching experimental film in that very department, and he also teaches the master program for media technology at the University of Leiden. Joost Rekveld has curated numerous film festivals, and he organized the conference and film program Sonic Light 2003, a festival devoted to light art. In 2004 he assembled the program 4D for the Holländische Filmmuseum, an exhibition and series of films and readings dealing with modernism’s legacy and the utopian ideas of the twentieth-century avant-garde. He has realized video and film projections for productions by ZT Hollandia, Orkest De Volharding, and the Asko Ensemble in collaboration with Paul Koek, Yannis Kyriakides, and Rozalie Hirs. In 2003 and 2004, he worked on two productions with Emio Greco and Pieter Scholten. His interpretation of Gluck’s Orfeus und Eurydike led to his being invited to the Edinburgh Festival in 2004. Joost Rekveld is a member of De Veenfabriek, a new ensemble for the exploration of the realm between theater, music, and the visual arts.
In 2005 escamotage by Yannis Kyriakides at Forum Neues Musiktheater.
