Jörg Mainka
Composer
Born in Salzgitter-Bad in 1962. Studied church music (with H.-J. Haarbeck) and music theory and composition (with Eugen-Werner Velte and Mathias Spahlinger) in Karlsruhe. Cofounder of the Neue Komponisten Gesellschaft in Karlsruhe. From 1990–96 he worked intensively at the ZKM as well as at the computer studio of the Musikhochschule in Karlsruhe. In 1988 he won a prize at the international composition competition Forum junger Komponisten of the Westdeutscher Rundfunk in Cologne. In 1995–96 he received a grant from the Akademie Schloss Solitude in Stuttgart. He has been commissioned to write compositions for the Staatsoper Stuttgart (1996 and 2003), the Donaueschinger Musiktage (2000), and others. From 1988–1999 he taught music theory at the university and Musikhochschule in Karlsruhe. Since 1999 he has been a professor of the analysis of contemporary music and music theory at the Musikhochschule “Hanns Eisler” in Berlin. In 2003 Wergo released a portrait CD on the composer in the series Edition Zeitgenössische Musik des Deutschen Musikrats. In 2004 he received the Förderpreis Musik in the context of the Kunstpreis Berlin. His works have been performed by Peter Eötvös, Sylvain Cambreling, the SWR Sinfonieorchester, Ensemble Modern, the Musikfabrik NRW, and Ensemble Aventure. Premiere of his piece Voyeur at the Forum Neues Musiktheater in summer 2004.
