  Andreas Breitscheid
Composer, Artistic Director

Studied composition with Luigi Nono in Venice and electronic music with Alvise Vidolin at the Venice conservatory. In 1984 he received a grant from the Heinrich-Strobel-Stiftung of the German Südwestfunk to work at the Freiburg Experimentalstudio. As Nono’s assistant he oversaw many productions and performances, including the premiere of Prometeo at the Venice Biennale in 1984 and its performance at La Scala in Milan in 1985. His own compositions focus on the theater. Thus, Andreas Breitscheid has written theatrical music for directors including Claus Peymann, Jürgen Flimm, the directing duo Karge/Langhoff, Axel Manthey, Christoph Nel, and Martin Kusej. His in-depth knowledge of room acoustics and electronic sound alteration and processing has made him a sought-after specialist in the field. As a sound director, he has overseen premieres and productions at the Frankfurt Opera, the Théâtre de la Monnaie in Brussels, the Wiener Staatsoper, the Opéra Bastille in Paris, the Semperoper in Dresden, the Salzburg Festival, and many other European opera houses and festivals. He has worked in the same capacity on numerous concerts and productions with the SWF, SDR, WDR, RAI, and ORF and has taken part in various recordings for Sony, Teldec, and others. Since 1992 Andreas Breitscheid has worked with the management of the Staatsoper Stuttgart as an artistic collaborator, and since 2002 he has been the artistic director of the Forum Neues Musiktheater of the Staatsoper Stuttgart, where his piece Im Spiegel wohnen (Living in the mirror) was the opening project in 2003.
