Informal presentation of workshop pieces and opportunity to interact with the artists

In recent years, artists and engineers from the STEIM Institut in Amsterdam have developed a large number of experimental musical instruments and custom software applications. One of the most important of these applications, called “LiSa,” makes possible live sampling. With this software program, musicians and artists can record, modify, and play back short acoustic fragments while a performance is still underway. The workshop will demonstrate how this software may be used to develop sound collages and sound structures and then implement them immediately in a live situation. It will also demonstrate how to make music with a joystick and how to generate a particular instrumental sound. The workshop is designed for a wide musical audience, including musicians, performance artists, DJs, sound designers, theater musicians, music educators, sound engineers, composers, and media artists. It is not necessary to be a programmer to make music with STEIM’s software.

The electronic and acoustic musicians and instrumentalists were given the opportunity to realize their own interactive musical ideas in a live-performance theater environment under the guidance of the celebrated live electronics artists from STEIM. On the evening of November 12, 2004 at 8:00 p.m. the workshop pieces will be informally presented, and there will be an opportunity to speak with the artists.

Workshop participants who wished to try out their own individual instruments and controllers were given the opportunity and necessary guidance to experiment with STEIM’s OIK technology. Portions of STEIM’s “Mini-Touch-Exhibition,” which can be used to create one’s own setups, will be available for this purpose, and the technology will be thoroughly explained. (These setups can also be used to control other manufacturers’ software via MIDI.)

The participants were divided into beginners, advanced, and professionals. It was essential that beginners took the LiSaX workshop from the beginning and stay in it for at least two days. Participants should have basic computer skills and an elementary knowledge of MIDI controlling.

The workshop was given in English.
