Täuschung, Irreführung [die] 2. Wahn [der] Don’t believe your eyes! Images lie. Nothing is as it seems. Interpretations dictate reality. In the media performance of the Berlin dance company phase7, there awaits the viewer a bewildering play of interactive illusions and disillusionments. The multilayeredness of interpretive possibilities is the starting point for a multimedia production that approaches illusion as an audiovisual system. Projections and illusions become the shifting stage environment for the actors. Self-perception and reflection lose themselves in the fluid and melting space and drive the perceptions of the audience. Archaic and avant-garde music, modern pictorial language, and body-centered Ausdruckstanz meet in a new constellation. Virtual performers join the ensemble. Who is real? Who is unreal? Software artist Frieder Weiß—known for his EyeCon software application—confronts the performers with their own selves, which are reproduced in time-delayed loops. The copy of one’s own “I” begins to assert its independence. The seeming controllability of the self-image is called into question. The Berlin company phase7 performing.arts is internationally known for its multimedia productions. The symbiosis of the latest media with music and dance, extended by electronic systems for the modification and visual translation of sound and movement, is the source of artistic inspiration for independent productions and commissioned works in the fields of science and the economy.
