Evan Parker - one of the most influential soprano saxophonists since John Coltrane. Joel Ryan - one of the most prominent representatives in the field of improvisation based on live electronics. Ryan and Parker have worked out a unique approach to the application of electronics to music, one that preserves the subtlety and presence of acoustic improvisation while at the same time greatly extending its territory and dynamic. This is not about electronic accompaniments or atmospheres but something more radical, like one-instrument, two players. The music springs from the machinery of digital technology but this acts primarily as a lever to dislocate intention. At the fulcrum is the surprise of hearing remarkable musical technique totally transposed in dimension. For both the players and the audience it’s a way of getting fresh ears without sacrificing musical fluency.
