Forum Neues Musiktheater of the Staatsoper Stuttgart: Opera in the Laboratory

» Photos Created in 2003, the Forum Neues Musiktheater of the Staatsoper Stuttgart has established itself, beyond the constraints of a repertory theater, as a laboratory for research on and development of the relationship between music and theater. The focus is on the use of new media and technologies on the stage.

“Where else in the world are there places like this today? It is a utopia of theater that I have discovered here for the first time.” That was the Italian composer Salvatore Sciarrino’s praise for the Forum Neues Musiktheater. At least four projects are presented each season, and composers, theater producers, and ensembles can apply with their ideas. With its technical and artistic know-how, its variably configurable performance space, its sound studio, and its studio and seminar spaces, the Forum makes it possible to develop and realize projects in several stages. The results of this work are presented to the public as works in progress in performances or, on a smaller scale, in the studio.

Open rehearsals provide a look at working procedures; introductory lectures reveal the background; and conversations with the productive teams after the performance offer an opportunity for exchange between those involved and the audience.

As a dialogue among professionals from the art and theater worlds as well as from commercial fields and interested laypersons, workshops with international renowned artists and specialists in technology as speakers are offered.

The Forum Neues Musiktheater is connected to a regional and international network of conservatories and universities as well as institutions for music and media art, and this concept makes it a unique center for interdisciplinary work in Europe.

The Akademie Schloss Solitude is a regular partner in cooperative projects with the Forum Neues Musiktheater. It has other cooperative projects with, for example, the ZKM in Karlsruhe, IRCAM in Paris, and STEIM in Amsterdam that concert research into electronic and digital media and their possibilities for interactive application in the audiovisual field.
