That hasn't slowed the Orb's ascent as an international club favorite, but it doesn't make for compel- ling listening at home. The notion of a live electronic record seems cheeky, as the band's input is limited to triggering samples over prerecorded rhythms. As is maybe more true of Laurie Anderson, though, the Orb's intriguing arragements of the familiar and the bizarre represent serious effort and a new aesthetic for creating music. It's the mainly uneventful results that cause this two-and-a-half hours to tick by at less than warp speed. These 12 capsules of electronic placebo are sonically-varied enough, with echoey synth tracks and samples layered to trap the mind rather than engage the body. A few cuts even approximate the disorienting jumble of sound pranksters Negativland, without the sense of humor. But the effect is a well-designed theatrical set, and leaves observers hungry for some action in the foreground.
