With the awakening cackle of a rooster that clocks the beginning of a new day, you will be lifted from the world as you know it and propelled into a new musical realm. It is a realm where unique rhythms will stir your body, and swirling melodies will soothe your soul. You have started an adventure beyond the ultraworld. You have encountered The Orb. _Adventures_Beyond_The_Ultraworld_ is the full-length debut by The Orb on Big Life/Mercury Records. From the subversive reggae undercurrent of the first U.S. single, "Perpetual Dawn", to the syncopated hip-hop of the ethereal European club smash "Little Fluffy Clouds", The Orb's musical mastermind, Alex Paterson, consistently strives to broaden and twist the boundaries of music. The evolution of The Orb can be traced back to London, 1988. Paterson, whose history includes stints as a club DJ and roadie, met musician Jimmy Cauty in a recording studio while Cauty was programing tracks. A musical synergy was generated between the two, and the result was the underground club favorite, "Tripping On Sunshine". Before Cauty departed to form The KLF, the duo created an acclaimed independent EP, The Kiss, which received extensive exposure on the John Peel radio program in the U.K. Carrying The Orb name on his own, Paterson expanded his palette of dance activities to include remixing and producing. Among his credits are projects with Primal Scream, Paradise 10, Art Of Noise, and Erasure. Such projects were a mere interlude before launching into the Ultraworld. Although some have tagged the music of The Orb as "ambient house", such categorization is too narrow. Songs like "A Huge Ever Growing Pulsating Brain That Rules From The Centre Of The Ultraworld:Live Mix MK 10" and "Outlands" deftly interweave elements of the techno age with baroque and classical music, and are covered with mind-altering vocal sonnets and sound effects. "I go for sounds that are very familiar to people's ears, but ones they wouldn't think of using", Paterson says. "House rhythms, sound-effects: waves, dolphins, what have you." >From a groove perspective, the beats stray outside the confines of House. The Orb tests the creativity of DJs by varying the beats - and occasionally dropping them out altogether. The Orb's _Adventures_Beyond_The_Ultraworld_ is an aural experience that enlivens the senses and proves that music does not require a pounding beat to seep into the spine and move your body.
