(is there any girl out there? Never have seen any in this list... :( ) Last saturday I had the unmeasurable pleasure of listening Tour de France for the first time in my life... Well, not really the first time, since here in Brazil our TV Networks use KW in 8 out of 10 programs concerning about Computers (their favs are It's more fun to compute and homecomputer. And once they used The Robots -The mix version- for a program about aerobics (!) ) now guess what music they use when talking about bike races??? I _REALLY_ don't know how couldn't I recognize their style (in fact, they use very short samples of the music)... but back to TDF ... Now I know why it was chosen as one of the best musics of last decade (in a list of 10,chosen by a brazilian magazine) When I was listening it for the first time I felt like I could take my bike, a headphone and ride till duesseldorf (yeah, even knowing there is an ocean between us) stop in front of their studio and shout "YOU'RE GREAT!!!" , but unfortunately my bike's tire was flat. I am still too impressed by the music to have "technical" opinions about it... later when I have I will share it. Now, the Elektric Music stuff... The first songs I listened were Crosstalk, Baby come back and TV (this order). Well, it did not surprised me, but it pleased, It is (IMHO) better than _THE_MIX_. Both are danceable, but _THE_MIX_ uses that boring BCBC... beat (I mean Bass drum, Cymbal, bass drum cymball ...). Ok, EM songs are poppier, sometimes It sounded kinda like Information Society or Pet Shop Boys to me. I would say: You cannot feel much of Bartos presence in EM, but you can surely feel his absence in KW. what only makes me feel more curious about the *REAL* reasons of Bartos/Fluer disbanding... I don't know if you fully understand me... the weak points in the "new" KW are the best points in EM ... that's my opinion... Ah! I really Loved their good humoured version of baby come back... I need it in CD!! (I have it taped right now)... Well... I have more to say, but I'd like to hear before going on... regards; Eduardo. ------------------------------ From: kraftwerk (kraftwerk mailing list) Date: 2 JUN 95 15:19:48 EDT Subject: Buffalo Robots Really-From: PPilgrim@Teleglobe.CA While watching satellite a few years back, I came across a documentary on Buffalo on one of the Spanish/Mexican channels. What caught my attention was the use of the KW song Robots from the Mix. The documentary lasted about 6 min but they used the middle section of the song with no lyrics 3 times! Now everytime I hear the song I see buffalo standing around chewing in my brain!!! I also saw models walking a runway in Paris to "The Model" B Quartet version. I thought "Boy are they Dumb". Well they looked nice anyway. Anyone out there in the states been able to get this thing? In addition I've been searching for some of the real old Kraftwerk stuff (Kraftwerk 1, 2 R&F etc.)locally without much luck. I'll be heading up to Montreal for a couple of days at the end of this month. Can anyone recommend a good record store to peruse while I am up there? Or for that matter a book store thats heard of the Bussy book. Thanks one and all for assistance. The other day, I had the pleasure to have drink with Pascal Bussy, and on this occasion he told me that the French and German releases of his book were imminent. Well, maybe not the German one. He recently received a phone call from Florian himself, and his first sentence on the phone was: "Your book, it's shit". Since then, our friends from KlingKlang have opposed to the release of the book in Germany, claiming to have the publication rights over all the photographs contained in the book (which is of course untrue). I will tell you the issue of this, if there is one. They're as paranoid as ever... The next album may not be exactly for tomorrow, with all this. It is called Rock en Stock on Creascent Stree at the corner of Ste. Catherine Street (downtown Montreal). It is on the Southwest side of the corner (about four shops south of the corner). They have some of the older albums on CD as well. You might find a few Kraftwerk items at Dutchy's Record Cave at the corner of St. Laurent and De Maisonneuve (east side of St. Laurent). Actually, I found a German import CD of Trans Europe Express (sung in German) there last weekend, and it's playing now......trans europa express.......and wir sind shaufensterpuppen (we are showroom dummies). As for the book, I am partly clueless. Ask at Dutchy's, and failing that, give the biggest book store in Montreal a try: Coles on Ste Catherine Street, not too far from Rock en Stock. If I remember correctly, this was the story. Kraftwerk did the version for the movie, but were unwilling to put it on the soundtrack, and that's why a cover was made by Ten Speed. I believe this only applies to the CD version of the soundtrack, because of Kraftwerk's unwillingness to put "Tour De France" on CD. The LP soundtrack contains the original version. I just checked the FAQ on this, and indeed this is the case. ------------------------------ From: kraftwerk (kraftwerk mailing list) Date: Mon, 12 Jun 1995 13:47:04 MET+100 Subject: Re: The KW Book Really-From: "ZAEPKE.KLAUS" Speaking about the Kraftwerk book by Pascal Bussy: it was originally announced to appear in early 1993 as: Pascal Bussy / Mick Fish: "Kraftwerk. The book appeared after some delay in mid 1993 under a different title, only Pascal Bussy was credited as the author and it contained only ca. 190 pages. Well, does _Stop Sellafield_ count as a movie? Other than that there is an obscure British film called _Radio On_ that is set in the year _Radioactivity_ was released. Pieces of several cuts from the album show up in the movie. I saw it in a hall on campus years ago. Never saw it on video; never saw a soundtrack. It was real low budget; black & white. And it really looked like one of the actresses skipped town during the filming; all of a sudden one of the main characters just disappears. It's made up of two guys, one whose name is Alexander Abraham. I believe they also were remixed by techno music guru Torsten Fenslau, who was part of another German group called Abfahrt... The Warner Brothers 12" has both sides clocked at 6:43, I think, which is how I came up with that guess. How popular are KRAFTWERK in your country? (i.e. How much music chart > success have they had, and radio play. PLEASE STATE YOUR COUNTRY.) I have heard Tour De France on college radio stations *numerous* times both around Boston and in upstate New York. Other than that, I have never heard KW on any commercial radio stations. > 6. What would you like KRAFTWERK to do next? Get with the program. I listen to alot of techno, ambient/house, acid jazz and all sorts of 80's synthpop. I like KW for their "vintage electronic" sound - one which I associate with old Tangerine Dream and other German bands. I am, however, pretty distraught at KW's lack of "motive" to put out any new material (The Mix, IMHO, does *not* qualify as "new"). They have, in my opinion, "come and gone". > 7. What do you think KARFTWERK will be doing in the year 2005? Hanging around Germany in coffee houses, intellectual gatherings, etc. talking about the "good old days". > 8. How much money do you spend a month on KRAFTWERK related things? (How > much would you be prepared to pay for a rare recording?) As stated above, I have most albums on CD and several on vinyl. I've seen KW 1, 2 and R&F on CD (available in Boston), but have *not* been willing to spend the US$40 on them. I spent US$38 on "N1 to Zurich", which was, IMHO, not worth it. Besides, what new KW is there to buy?! > 10. What other music do you listen to, and what attracts you to it? Orb, Paul Weller, Jamiroquai, Level 42, LFO, FSOL, Talk Talk, Incognito, 777, Seal, Steely Dan, PWEI, Pet Shop Boys, [various] Acid Jazz samplers, Thomas Dolby, Sugar, JMJ, Aphex Twin, Electronic, The The... These bands all encompass a wide variety of musical styles. Performances are excellent and songs have "staying power" - i.e., you can listen to them over and over without saying "ok, I've consumed this album". KW, relative to other bands in the same "genre", has *not* kept up with evolving styles, as others have. Take Orb, for example... their first and most recent albums are *significantly* different - they have progressed their sound in their _four_ years of recordings. While I might have said this about KW in the mid 80's, they have clearly NOW fallen into the "classic techno" category. I think that, in 2005, we'll all be listening to "Home Computer" in the same radio set as Steve Miller and Traffic. ;-) Techno, in my definition, is something "new"... "different". I have heard DJ's and musicians alike say that "if you've heard it before, it's *not* techno." KW themselves call their music "folk music", which I now understand. When we listen to Autobahn, Neon Lights or Boing Boom Tschak, we are all sitting around the "electronic campfire" reminiscing... Sorry if this message is depressing! His productions are known for clarity yet punchness (those of us in the pro-audio world know how hard it is to achieve that...). The CD-ROM is called "Best of German Rock Vol. 1". It contains material from 10 German Rock Groups, like Kraftwerk, Marius Mueller- Westernhagen, Peter Maffay, Nina Hagen, Trio, Nena and some others I can't remember at the moment. There's a biography, a (very short) discography, one piece of music (quite bad, not the original versions!) and a couple of photos for each artist. The Kraftwerk track is "The Model". The number of Kraftwerk photos is 27 (25 concert photos and 2 backstage photos). I believe that they were taken during their concert in Zuerich 1981. The quality of the photos is still acceptable, though most photos are quite dark. They were obviously taken without a flash and I guess that they're unofficial fan photos, though the CD-ROM is an official product, not a bootleg. The price of the CD-ROM is DM 49,80. It is available in most computer shops in Germany. I don't know if it can be ordered by mail. The CD-ROM comes from Switzerland. I can't remember the company's name at the moment, but I can look it up, if you wish. I wouldn't say that this CD-ROM is a must, but it may be of interest for "hardcore" Kraftwerk-fans, photo collectors and people who are interested in their 1981 tour.
