I remember they used an instrumental version of 'Computer World' for the title music, but they also used other tracks from the album (such as 'Numbers') for incidental music during the programs. Anyone know if they were just culled from the LP or specially recorded? john. ______________________________________________________________________________ ``If You Act Like A Dumbshit, William John Hulley They'll Treat You As An Equal'' jonny@fuzzball.demon.co.uk -- J. I have to say that I was quite impressed. There were several observations I made while listening. One obvious one is that Bartoz actually uses bass/drum instead of white noise. It seems as if he's trying to "catch up" to the modern techno craze that Kratwerk invented long long time ago. Overdrive is an example I can think of (as well as Information). Esperanto on the other hand tries to squeeze in a bit of industrial sound with the screeching "hand over the mike technique". TV sounds like a classic Kraftwerk song reminiscent of Musique Non-Stop. Quite surprised to hear Andy McKluskey (OMD) lend his voice. The track he sings on is very hard to make out. It sounds part like Yaz, Depeche Mode, OMD, etc. Weird, but interesting. Then again Andy has been a Kraftwerk fan for years (which you all probably knew). I also happen to like OMD's cover of Neon Lights as well. Now that I've listened to it, I'm not at all disappointed. But I know darn well that now that I have it, it'll be released in the States for $10 while I'm home on Spring Break. Murphy's Law lives! :) As a debut effort from Kraftwerk vets, _Esperanto_ is quite good. There seem to be three different approaches to the tracks: actual pop-like songs, such as "TV" and "Show Business," computer-effect show-offs, like "Lifestyle" and "Overdrive," and the one industrial-sounding "Esperanto." I particularly like "Lifestyle" (I hope this is the next single!) and "Show Business"... I've noticed some obvious similarities between sounds; I wonder if Bartos is sampling from old KW albums. As Kyong Lee pointed out, "TV" sounds very much like "Musique Non-Stop." I think they share the same basic bass track. There is at least one more, but I can't remember off-hand from where. I think it's in one of the later tracks, perhaps "Information" or "Crosstalk." If it's true that Bartos didn't have the resources KW used, that makes this album even more impressive. Why did Karl and Emil leave the group, anyway? On to responses... >What exactly is white noise? (More jargon I'm not entirely familiar with, >I guess)... I don't know the official music definition, but I believe that white noise is basically like static, a whirring fan, or the hum of a car engine: the same tones played constantly, with these tones not being musical notes in the conventional sense. >Many of the songs [on _Esperanto_] have this "sameness" to them which >is never a problem on KW albums, least of all _The Mix_ (at least as far >as tracks from different albums go). See above. I think there's at least some variance in the styles, if not the sounds used. Maybe the CD5s have some alternate versions with more experimenting with sounds... does anyone out there have "TV" or "Crosstalk" and can tell us? All in all, _Esperanto_ is worth picking up, even at import prices. I'm pleased with it and eagerly await more releases (from them and KW- are they recording anything now?). G'day all! Wish I could find it at all. The 7" cost me the equivalent of $14. Last time I tried to find the 12", I was told that, yes, I could have it for $150 - not because it was worth it, but because it would be so difficult for the seller to replace it. That is highly overpriced by international standards. I suppose it depends on which 12" it is. In the UK, the original 12" goes for about 15-20 pounds, whereas the remix goes for about 10 pounds. > What really ticks me off is that I used to have it, but I lost a major part of > my record (vinyl) collection a couple years ago. CEMA Special Markets has released _Trans-Europe Express_ and _Man-Machine_ on CD, so who knows? I also thought I'd note that I found two import mix discs at that particular store. There was _The Remix_, with a mostly white back cover, a picture of one band member with a turntable on the front. It had about a dozen tracks, all mixes of KW works, mostly recent, and a lot of them done by "Razormaid," whoever that is. The other was _The First DJ Edition_, which looks a lot like _The Mix_ except that it's red. It had nine tracks, a few of which were on the other disc as well. They were $27 each. I didn't get either of them, being wary of their legitimacy (I couldn't see the company names because of the plastic long-box sized security cases) and the fact that I have most of the tracks in one form or another (though not these mixes). The band were [sic] due to fly over from Germany yesterday (March 21) to view the site. "They are expected to transport their entire Kling-Klang studio from Dusseldorf and put it on stage." The event is in fact due to run from 5 pm 30th April till 5 pm the following day, according to ticket agents Ticketmaster. Other acts appearing are Trans-Global Underground, Banco de Gaia and many others. Ticket costs: 25 pounds. Plus 2.50 booking fee. To: kraftwerk Really-From: EEID@ACAD.ALBION.EDU Requests for add/removal from this list to kraftwerk-request@cs.uwp.edu In rummaging through the discography for Kraftwerk, I thought of something: what, in all this, is the most vital. What should someone who wants to own Kraftwerk music pick up? For example, I was first exposed to KW with _Electric Cafe_. The first disc I got was _The Mix_ as a gift (which was wonderful), and then found _Radioactivity_, _Robots_, and _Electric Cafe_ in the cut-outs at a local Sound Warehouse, and then _Esperanto_ recently. But I wonder if I'm missing something... So I ask those of you on the list: what of Kraftwerk's albums are "essentials," in your opinion? My vote's in for _The Mix_, but with my limited exposure (as you can see above) and the fact that no one around here has even _heard_ of Kraftwerk (is Michigan culturally empty?), I haven't been able to hear enough KW to strongly recommend anything else. Let's hear what you all have to say! It's really funny that NONE of the big music stores in town have heard of this CD! Even when I told them it was domestic and was released back in '93 (although I didn't know it was released way back in the fall!). I'm getting really sick of the stores here... The 1 or 2 that ever carry any techno (maybe a selection of a maximum of 20 cds, not including domestic comps) charge around $28 up to $40 for each CD... This is particularly ironic since it's hard to find a more blatantly Kraftwerk-obsessed group of people than the folks making Detroit techno (you know, in Michigan). | Dave Walker, Detroit Art Services (DAS) | | | | marmoset@msen.com "...driving in my Cosmic Car..." | ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 25 Mar 94 11:54:06 -0500 From: kraftwerk (kraftwerk mailing list) Subject: What's vital? Personally, I like Radio-Activity, Autobahn and The Man-Machine, enjoy Computer World once in a while, and was absolutely aghast at hearing the Mix album ( which was one of my first CD's btw ) - I just didn't like the sound of the new "Robots", "Radio-activity" etc. Of course, now I'm kind of used to it, but it's still probably my least played KW CD ... I guess I should like the elusive first three albums, but I've never managed to find them :-( ( I did see "Exceller 8" once, but stupidly passed it up ) -- Rajesh ps. Check out the Artificial Intelligence compilation on Warp Records, several artists on it claim KW to be one of their influences, and one of the tracks "Telefon" has a sample from, you guessed it, "Telephone Call" ------------------------------ End of Kraftwerk Digest ****************************** Date: Sun, 27 Mar 94 04:00:14 CST From: kraftwerk@cs.uwp.edu Reply-To: kraftwerk@cs.uwp.edu (Kraftwerk) Subject: Kraftwerk Digest V1 #296 Kraftwerk Digest Sun, 27 Mar 94 Volume 1 : Issue 296 Today's Topics: What's vital? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Fri, 25 Mar 1994 10:31:59 -0500 (EST) From: kraftwerk (kraftwerk mailing list) Subject: What's vital?
